Infiniti Key ID Incorrect: 8 Ways to Fix!!

563

If you own an Infiniti vehicle equipped with an intelligent key system, you might encounter a situation where your key fob isn’t detected by the car, making it impossible to start the engine.

This can be highly frustrating and inconvenient, especially when you’re pressed for time or in a remote location.

So, what causes this issue and how can you resolve it? Below are some potential causes and solutions for the Infiniti key ID incorrect problem.

How to Fix Incorrect Infiniti Key ID?

#1. Replace Key Fob Battery

The key fob relies on a small lithium coin cell battery to power the transmitter and receiver, which communicate with the car’s computer.

Over time, the battery can lose its charge and become unable to send or receive signals.

As a result, the car fails to recognize the key fob, leading to error messages like “No I-Key Detected” or “I-Key System Error” on the instrument cluster.

To address this issue, simply replace the key fob battery. You can do this yourself by following these steps:

  • Locate the mechanical key inside the key fob and release it by sliding the lock knob on the back.
  • Insert the mechanical key into the slot on the side of the key fob and gently pry it open.
  • Remove the old battery from the holder and dispose of it properly.
  • Insert a new CR2032 battery into the holder with the positive (+) side facing up.
  • Snap the key fob back together and test it by pressing any button.

If replacing the battery doesn’t resolve the problem, you may need to reprogram the key fob or investigate other potential issues.

#2. Worn Buttons

The rubber buttons on the key fob can deteriorate over time due to frequent use, and exposure to heat, moisture, dirt, or chemicals.

This can hinder their ability to make contact with the circuit board inside the key fob and transmit signals to the car.

To fix this issue, consider replacing the worn buttons or the entire key fob shell. Replacement buttons or shells can be purchased online or from a dealer.

Alternatively, as a temporary fix, you can use a small piece of aluminum foil to cover the worn button and improve its conductivity. However, this might not provide a reliable long-term solution.

#3. Poor Battery Contact

The battery holder inside the key fob can loosen or corrode over time, resulting in a weak connection between the battery and the circuit board.

This can impact the power supply and signal transmission of the key fob.

To address this issue, clean and tighten the battery holder by following these steps:

  • Open the key fob as described previously.
  • Remove the battery and inspect it for signs of corrosion or damage. Replace it if necessary.
  • Use a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to clean any dirt or corrosion from the battery holder and contacts.
  • Gently bend or squeeze the metal tabs on the battery holder using a small screwdriver or pliers to ensure a snug fit with the battery.
  • Reinsert the battery with the positive (+) side facing up.
  • Close the key fob and test it by pressing any button.

If cleaning and tightening the battery holder doesn’t solve the problem, you might need to replace the entire key fob or investigate other potential issues.

#4. Water Damage

Water damage is another potential cause of key fob malfunction in Infiniti vehicles. The key fob is not waterproof and can be damaged by exposure to water, moisture, humidity, or liquids.

This can lead to short circuits, corrosion, or oxidation on the circuit board or components inside the key fob.

To resolve this issue, it’s crucial to dry out the key fob as soon as possible. Follow these steps:

  • Open the key fob as described previously.
  • Remove the battery and dispose of it properly.
  • Gently blot any excess water or liquid from the key fob using a soft cloth or paper towel.
  • Use a hairdryer on low heat or place the key fob in a bowl of uncooked rice or silica gel packets to absorb any remaining moisture. Avoid high heat or direct sunlight, as it can damage the key fob.
  • Wait for at least 24 hours or until the key fob is completely dry.
  • Insert a new battery with the positive (+) side facing up.
  • Close the key fob and test it by pressing any button.

If drying out the key fob doesn’t resolve the problem, you might need to replace the entire key fob or investigate other potential issues.

#5. Defective Key Fob

A defective key fob can also cause issues with key recognition in Infiniti vehicles. Manufacturing defects, faulty components, or damaged circuit boards can prevent the key fob from functioning properly.

This leads to the car failing to recognize the key fob and displaying messages like “Incorrect Key ID” or “Invalid Key ID” on the instrument cluster.

To resolve this issue, replace the defective key fob with a new one. You can purchase a new key fob online or from a dealer. However, keep in mind that you’ll need to program the new key fob to your car before you can use it. Follow these steps:

  • Insert the mechanical key into the driver’s door lock and turn it to unlock the door.
  • Open the driver’s door and get inside the car.
  • Insert the mechanical key into the ignition switch and turn it to the ON position (do not start the engine).
  • Within 10 seconds, press and release any button on the new key fob.
  • The hazard warning lights will flash twice, confirming the registration of the new key fob.
  • Repeat steps 4 and 5 for any additional key fobs you wish to register (up to four).
  • Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and remove the mechanical key.
  • Test all registered key fobs by pressing any button.

If replacing and programming the key fob doesn’t solve the problem, consider investigating other potential issues.

#6. Receiver Module Issues

Receiver module issues can also cause key fob problems in Infiniti vehicles. The receiver module receives and decodes the signals from the key fobs, transmitting them to the car’s computer.

It’s typically located inside the car, usually under the dashboard or behind the glove box. Wiring problems, fuse issues, or internal damage can lead to malfunctioning receiver modules.

To address this issue, check and repair the receiver module by following these steps:

  • Locate the receiver module in your car, referring to your owner’s manual or a repair guide for your specific model if necessary.
  • Inspect the wiring and connectors of the receiver module for any damage, corrosion, loose connections, or short circuits. Repair or replace them if needed.
  • Check the fuse of the receiver module for any signs of a blown or burnt fuse. Replace it with a new one of the same rating if necessary.
  • If there are no problems with the wiring or fuse, you might need to test the receiver module using a diagnostic tool or replace it with a new one.

#7. Signal Interference

Signal interference can also prevent key fobs from working correctly in Infiniti vehicles.

External factors such as metal objects, electronic devices, radio waves, magnetic fields, or other key fobs can block or disrupt the signal, leading to the car’s inability to receive and recognize the key fob.

To address this issue, take the following precautions to avoid or eliminate potential sources of interference:

  • Keep the key fob away from metal objects like coins, keys, jewelry, or tools.
  • Avoid placing the key fob near electronic devices such as cell phones, laptops, tablets, or chargers.
  • Keep the key fob away from radio sources such as radio towers, power lines, or wireless routers.
  • Avoid exposing the key fob to magnetic sources like magnets, speakers, or motors.
  • Ensure that the key fob is not in close proximity to other key fobs that may operate on similar frequencies.

#8. Dead 12 Volt Battery

A dead 12-volt battery can also cause issues with the key fob in Infiniti vehicles. The 12-volt battery powers the car’s electrical system and accessories, and if it dies due to age, wear, low charge, parasitic drain, or extreme temperatures, it can affect the car’s ability to detect and recognize the key fob, preventing the engine from starting.

To resolve this issue, recharge or replace the 12-volt battery as needed. Consult your vehicle’s manual or seek professional assistance to ensure the proper replacement or recharging procedure is followed.

By addressing these potential causes and following the suggested solutions, you can troubleshoot and resolve key fob issues in your Infiniti vehicle, restoring the functionality and convenience of the intelligent key system.
